A Winters Dawn by Philip West - Original Oil Painting
 | Original Oil Painting This peaceful scene at East Kirkby in the winter of 1944 gives a very real feel for the vitally important work undertaken by ground crew in all weathers. At this stage of the war, to help identification at a distance, the tail fins of 57-squadron Lancasters wore a black vertical bar on a red background. The squadron flew on 348 raids, with 108 Lancasters lost in action plus 31 in accidents. The painting is signed on the back by Flt. Lt. Philip Ainley.

 | Original Oil Painting Lancaster On November 3rd 1943, 21 year old Flt/Lt Reid's Lancaster was hit during two seperate attacks by enemy fighters. His navigator was killed and the wireless operator fatally wounded. Bill Reid was also seriously injured with wounds to his head, shoulders and hands. Despite severe damage to the aircraft and with no oxygen, heating or communication systems, Flt/Lt Reid pressed on and successfully bombed the target some fifty minutes later.
